A Solid Technical Study, Not a Gig Book
While not a typical lead sheet for gigs, this Oscar Peterson book is a powerful tool for serious piano technique development. The exercises are strictly notated, focusing on foundational jazz patterns rather than improvisation from chord symbols. It's a fantastic investment for honing chops and understanding Peterson's style, though I wouldn't pull it out at a request gig.

A Piano Method, Not for Accompaniment, but Builds Skills
While this book isn't designed for vocal accompaniment or collaborative work, Oscar Peterson's exercises are superb for developing individual piano technique. The focus on jazz etudes and minuets builds excellent dexterity and rhythmic precision. For any pianist, even those aiming for vocal coaching, improving one's own jazz language and facility with this material would be highly beneficial.

Great Exercises
The reviewers who say this is a waste of time for experienced pianists must all have recording contracts and be touring professionals. I've been playing for 30 years and I love this book. You can make what you want to out of these exercises. Yes, they are basic minuet structures, but there are lots of interesting chord changes and progressions, and opportunities for improvisation. For me, this is as if Oscar Peterson sits down with you in person and recommends exercises to help you get better. I think it is a great book for intermediate players, and even advanced level players can get a lot out of this book.

Perfect for younger pianists
This is a great introduction to jazz, especially for classically trained young pianists. There is no improvising; everything is notated. Perfect for adding a little jazz to a piano lesson without having to get into improvisation and chord symbols.
