Two of my favorite colleagues, Meghan Wagner and Tony Paustian approached me and asked me to write a piece in celebration of their father, Kevin Paustian, and his upcoming retirement. They said they wanted it to be at a middle school difficulty level to contribute to the available repertoire for developing student musicians; because their dad was very passionate about it. I interviewed Meghan and Tony and asked them to tell me about their dad and his lifetime career as a music educator. They described him as patient, thorough, optimistic, full of integrity, and clever. They told me he is the kind of man that actually writes to lawmakers to encourage the change he believes in. This dedication is also present in his commitment to being a lifelong learner. Meghan and Tony shared that Kevin still practices trumpet every day. As a dad they said that Kevin had high expectations but was always in it with them and that they always felt much trust and encouragement. They also shared that both of them came to become educators on their own, there was no pressure or recommendation from dad. I think that says a lot. I also learned that Kevin is an incredible grandpa who delights in terrible puns and would do anything for his grandchildren. As we discussed what kind of piece I should write I asked what kind of music Kevin likes. You’ll not be surprised to hear they said he really likes band music, and that melody is king. They also shared that he enjoys the song Lullabye by Billy Joel, a song written for his child. This resonated with me and is a major inspiration of this piece. Other inspirations you will hear include a playful middle section representing his love of being a grandfather, and a trumpet melodic statement at the end, answered by horn and clarinet (Meghan and Tony’s instruments, respectively), followed by the melody in the trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, and mallet percussion parts, which are the instruments played by his grandchildren.
Commissioned by two band directors for their band director father, this middle-school level composition focuses on developing student musicians' abilities. Celebrating their father and his student's accomplishments musically, Erin weaves melodic threads using instrument combinations that are played by the father, the children and even his grandchildren. Based on a simple lullabye theme, this emotional composition is great for legato style development, intonation work and balance across the ensemble. Also a great choice for contest or a reflective moment in any performance.
