The Silence after Thunder serves as a requiem for long-fought battles throughout history, where unfathomable devastation and loss crown no true victor. The sounds of war drums, the marching of cavalry, and blaring horn calls evoke the undercurrent of the battlefield. Performance NotesThe first eight measures immerse the audience in a scene of trepidation as trumpet fanfares erupt, driving the music into the immediacy of battle preparation at the first Allegro.Measure 25 marks a moment of strategy and planning, where, soon after, hordes of soldiers and cavalry take up arms, preparing to travel impossible distances across treacherous terrain to defend their sovereign land from supposed invaders of formidable caliber.By m. 70, the legion of soldiers approaches the limits of its domain with no opposition forces in sight. Perhaps they were deterred by fear, or maybe it was a false alarm. Then, suddenly, at m. 80, an equally immense display of combatants parades onto the opposite side of the defending forces, launching a surprise attack. Chaos ensues as both forces charge toward each other.Hours, if not days, pass by m. 111. Only utter devastation and the eerie quiet of the once-roaring battlefield remain.
