The title for Shine Kindly Here comes from a poem by Mark Twain entitled Warm Summer Sun:Warm summer sun, Shine kindly here, Warm southern wind, Blow softly here. Green sod above, Lie light, lie light. Good night, dear heart, Good night, good night.I wrote this piece while visiting my family cabin on the shores of the Salish Sea in Washington State. I watched the sun dance on the gentle waves and saw shifting patterns of light that were brilliant and beautiful in their constantly changing formations. The opening mallet figures represent this filigree of sunlight and water. The soaring seabirds, beauty of natural spaces, and interdependence of the ecosystem all inspired the intersecting lines and figures in this tune. The steady, driving rhythms and fugue-like section propel the piece to a dramatic conclusion. I hope you enjoy playing this uplifting fanfare.
