Here's a Health to the Company Concert Band - Sheet Music

When asked to write a piece in honor of my dear friend Dr. Robert Palmer, who is suffering from some serious health issues, Health to the Company came immediately to mind. It is a tune sung to each other’s health as one sits among friends enjoying adult beverages (not that any band directors do that!) Bob is a great musician, a really fine composer and teacher, but more than that, a fantastic human that served as a role model for generations of students in western North Carolina. Bob helped me become a better teacher with long discussions, usually over food and drink and occasionally stepped into my band room, teaching me how to solve some musical problem or another. I pieced Health to the Company with another fun Irish tune, The Butterfly Jig, and hope your band enjoys the settings. Be sure to observe the sudden dynamic changes, for example, m17, and keep up a spry tempo throughout the first and last sections ("The Butterfly Jig"). The middle section should be kept very legato and expressive, so please shape phrases as you see fit and let the melody, and countermelody, lines prevail. The last phrase of the piece can be sung by the band or played by a single clarinet. Bob is a good friend and has given his career to sharing his love for music with his students. In no way can any piece encapsulate what he did, but I thank Andrew Jimison and the Brevard High School Wind Ensemble for asking me to write this and premiering it in Bob’s honor.
