excelent book
Pattern play 1, is a very simple didactic book that takes you by the hand, step by step, from the initial creative ideas begin to improvise. I like the method and highly recommend it is fun and entertaining thanks to Master Forrest Kinney thank you for this contribution to music education

remove book
In group class, You must remove the book of the student that plays the treble part. This helps them to understand that they must make up the melody. This book is for level 3.

Students love this. I was never taught improvisation, and this allows me to teach improvisation. I use it in group class. It's wonderful! It's level 3.

Pattern Play 1 Review
I met the author of Pattern Play 1 at a conference, and saw a wonderful demonstration of people playing from the book. Since then I have been using this book to teach improvisation to piano students. It offers basic musical ideas in various styles of performance, and suggests how to work with these ideas. Pattern Play 1 starts on the black keys and moves to the white keys. The book is very helpful. I recommend Pattern Play 1 for anyone who can read music. I am also using Pattern Play 2, and I recommend that book for more advanced pianists.

Excellent Resource
Pattern Play 1 is an excellent tool for teaching improvisation to the beginning student. While I had taught the pentatonic scale to my beginners, and this starts with F sharp pentatonic scale, this makes it much easier to move beyond the initial steps. Because I was never taught improv as a child or teen, I find this helps me a great deal, and the students find it helps them break thruogh the I can't do improv barrier.
