This portrait of old New Orleans captures the lively and beautiful moods of this great city in its most elegant light. Eugenie's touching tribute to the city of her childhood is especially meaningful in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The engaging duo for two pianos-eight hands alternates between a jazzy, upbeat style and lyrical warmth, with a celebratory reference to “Oh When The Saints Come Marching In” for a final flourish. This masterful ensemble piece paints a truly memorable portrait of New Orleans and is also stunning recital fare. HLSPL Level 5 Intermediate piano ensemble (2 pnos/8 hands); Score contains Piano I & Piano II duo parts. Two scores are needed for rehearsal. A piano solo version is also available.

Unique, High-Quality Ensemble Work
As a gigging musician, this 'Intermediate' 2 Pianos, 8 Hands piece by Rocherolle isn't typical for a solo booking, but it's a phenomenal ensemble showpiece. The vibrant New Orleans style is well-arranged and captures the mood beautifully. It's ideal for specialized events requiring a multi-piano setup. While it lacks explicit chord symbols, the notation is clear for its intended purpose, making it a distinct choice for ensemble performances.

Rich Texture, Potential for Vocal Ensembles
While designed as an 'Intermediate' 2 Pianos, 8 Hands ensemble, this piece by Rocherolle boasts a remarkably rich and varied texture. The blend of jazzy rhythms and lyrical warmth creates a dynamic New Orleans portrait. For a collaborative pianist or vocal coach, it offers a sophisticated backdrop for vocal groups rather than simple melody doubling. It requires careful adaptation, but the musicality makes it a worthwhile consideration for advanced vocal ensemble projects.

Fun, But Beware It's Very Long
Fun jazz piece. I have loved helping my students put this together but wish I hadn't taken on such a long piece as it already takes a long time to get 4 parts together. I read another review warning that it is very long but I ignored it and thought, Oh we'll be fine. After extra rehearsals that are extra-long, hindsight, I would have chosen another piece. Also, there has been an error in printing in 2021 and I spent hours purchasing and returning prints. I understand Hal Leonard is doing a reprint.

Inspiring title.
If you want a piece for piano ensemble, motivating and beautiful it is the perfect piece. The composer has been able to create different movements (blues section, Gospel, etc.) which show the richness of the city of New Orleans. You travel in the past. Be careful if you are a teacher of the length of the piece. Enjoy...
