Great First Exposure
Many First classics collections are arranged as if they were part of a fake book: harmonized with I, I've, & V7 chords. This book contains well known pieces by master composers arranged the way the great composers wrote: with rich harmonies, mixtures of harmonic and contrapuntal styles, and varied textures. The level of the pieces matches the green 1B Thompson Course, but it is harder than the red course even at the end of grade 1. For teachers using a modern method like Faber or Bastien, etc., the difficulty of this book would match level 2-3. This book is a great tool for teaching music history and style. The pieces are in date order, and the differences in the music style is evident from the arrangements. I reserve this book for my stronger students. It is too hard for the slower learners. But for the students who can handle it, the collection is wonderful.

First Year Classics
I don't know what the previous reviewer considers Classics unless it was just music With which THEY were familiar. This book has wonderful classics with which ANY good pianist should become familiar. Lots of great technical study, mixed with wonderful musical selections. I am using this as a supplement with Thompson's First Grade Book. I started it when the student was about 3/4 through the book. I had been using other technic books but this particular student was bored with them. I pulled out this book and she loves it! They are not simple pieces. Your student will have to work at them, but they get a great feeling of accomplishment, along with a terrific piece of music when they finish. The student will have something worth playing for family, friends, or talent shows at school or church when they learn these.

first year classics
i was expecting a book with several classics--instead the book contained only one--Handel's Messiah. I like this work, but i did not want only one piece of music. really disappointed.
