During an emotionally intense summer, Mozart had just lost his father Leopold and was preparing Don Giovanni. Amid this contrast, he wrote this serenade in G major, conceived without any known commission, perhaps as an intimate and luminous refuge in summer Vienna.

Originally, the work consisted of five movements, but one of the minuets was lost. Even so, Eine kleine Nachtmusik has reached us with natural ease. Its famous opening became a universal symbol of nocturnal elegance, concealing the personal moment in which Mozart composed it.
