Bach's seven multipartite toccatas are the most significant clavier works of his early years. They transfer an expanded, sonata-like species of the North German organ toccata to the more intimate world of the harpsichord. This new edition presents the toccatas in all the relevant versions surviving in manuscript copies from Bach's immediate circle. By offering the definitive “Urtext” from the New Bach Edition, it enables professional performances on the highest level and adheres to the latest findings of international Bach scholarship.

Bach is Best
The Toccatas are fairly early repertoire of Bachs and are not explicitly composed for harpsichord or organ, as these were the times where the performer, as with Froberger or Reincken, was given the choice to modify the pieces depending on the instrument being played. As a result, these Toccatas can be played on either. They are challenging without being very difficult, but certainly not for the beginner!
