Steve Gadd is one of the most influential drummers of our time. He has set new standards for the art of drumming and his unique contribution can be heard on albums by Paul Simon, Chick Corea, Rickie Lee Jones, Steely Dan and Paul McCartney, among hundreds of others. His influence can be heard in the playing of virtually every contemporary drummer. Up Close/In Session is a new, revised and updated version of the classic DCI music videos that put video drum education on the map. Prepared under Steve's supervision, this new book combines all of the footage from the classic tapes with an expanded book documenting Steve's influential approach to the drums. The original Up Close was the first authorized book from Steve Gadd. Transcribed by Steve and Bobby Cleall, this book gives drummers the opportunity to study Steve's most famous grooves and solo patterns with the help of Steve's own stickings and musical insight. Featured are detailed transcriptions of the material that Steve performs on the video. Up Close focuses on three main topics: drum corps/rudiments, including a rudimental solo and how to apply rudiments to the drum set; jazz/R&B, featuring a shuffle and five-page solo transcription; time/studio playing, demonstrating how to build a track in the studio (including fills), chart reading, samba and Latin grooves, as well as transcriptions of “Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover” and “Late in the Evening” by Paul Simon. In Session features Steve playing in a recording studio with two different rhythm sections, playing different styles of music. Accompanied by Richard Tee (piano) and Will Lee (bass), then by Eddie Gomez (upright bass), and Jorge Aldo (piano), Steve plays different approaches to R&B, reggae, shuffles, funk, samba, bebop, and Latin tunes to show how he crafts his parts. These performances are documented in note-for-note transcriptions from Terry Branam. Included are video and audio files that match the transcriptions in the book. There is also a bonus transcription and video of Steve's performance at Zildjian Day 1984. The original Up Close and In Session videos are available separately from Hudson Music.
