A modern Classical piano sonata inspired by Beethoven, Piano Sonata no. 10 in F Minor includes the best of both the Classical and Modern Eras. The first movement presents a mournful melody over a chromatically varying accompaniment, with a small respite from the sorrow in the middle. The second movement moves on to more joyful times with a happy scherzo, in which the main theme disguises itself in many different forms. In the troubled final movement, virtuosity takes on an elevated role throughout the almost perpetuum mobile that ensues, while a dazzling coda brings the work to a dramatic and firm close.
