Fond memories
I played this piece in high school and it was a favorite among my fellow band friends. We used to beg to play it, but our instructor said we couldn't play it for every concert! I play flute, so my part was interesting, but I can see how some instruments weren't as thrilled as I was.

But where's the music?
There are some bits of this piece that can be used effectively as great teaching moments. On the whole however this is just not musically interesting. The ideas don't flow together very well, the sections are stitched together haphazardly, and it just doesn't catch my attention. I'm not saying Swearingen is a bad composer. He does what he intends to do (I think) very well. It's just what he intends to do that I don't like very much.
