Composed by Michael Bomier. African,Contemporary,Instructional,Standards. Score. 31 pages. Michael Butkus-Bomier #2032977. Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862527).
The African continent is the most tropical of all the continents. It has such widely varied terrain, from deep forests, to impassable valleys and canyons, to the savannahs of the southern tip to the deserts of the North. Here are five pieces that aspire to capture just a bit of the color, mystery, natural beauty and sometimes forbidding nature of the various landscapes. Saharan Sirocco, a hot desert wind, Drums and a Song, a black-key percussive and melodic item, Beneath the Congo Canopy, dark chords and a haunting melody. The Cape of Good Hope, in a Storm brings us an ostinato that represents the unchanging nature of well, Nature! Yet, the seas around the Cape are only stormy for a short season, and the dynamics, diminished harmony, and metric modulations paint the picture of a storm, with all the rollicking and panic that must accompany any sailor going 'round the Bend. The suite ends with a tribute to the majesty and grandeur of the continent's central Rift Valley. The audio clip is of Saharan Sirocco. The suite can be performed as individual titles, or as a unit, and in no particular order. The sequence makes sense as it moves through various moods, but is not by any means the only way to program it. Pedaling is at the discretion of the player or teacher. Some pedaling is marked specifically. MBB.

Straight Up Awful
I am nothing short of angry that I purchased this. It cannot even be called music. I homeschool my children and like to incorporate our studies into their piano repertoire so I got this to go with a unit on Africa. This music is not remotely African, nor even reflective of the landscape. It is nothing but a vomit of accidentals and random time signatures (7/8?), hard on both fingers and ears. Each piece is straight up awful.

Biggest Waste of Money--This is NOT Music
I will not give these pieces even one star. I am a piano teacher, but also a homeschooling mom who likes to add to our music repertoire with pieces complimenting our studies. I had hopes for Five African Scenes even though I didn't particularly care for the one sample. Nothing, I repeat, nothing about these pieces is appealing, and they do not sound even remotely African. Perhaps Asian here or there, but it's mostly a serious overuse of accidentals and a lot of dissonant cacophony. It is as if the composer was trying to show off, with ridiculous time signatures (7/8) that are ever changing, and employing every type of note and notation known and unknown to man to look knowledgeable and important. This music is hard on the fingers and even harder on the ears. I am so angry that I spent money on this. Be warned!
