Botequim do Zeca is a vibrant and deeply Brazilian choro written for wind quintet, inspired by a real and unforgettable episode in Brazilian popular music: a festive feijoada at the home of Zeca Pagodinho, which culminated in the recording of one of his DVDs.
The piece musically translates the relaxed atmosphere of a traditional botequim — the improvised samba circle, easy laughter, cold beer, and the warmth and camaraderie that only Rio de Janeiro’s suburban culture can offer. All of this is filtered through the language of contemporary choro, enriched by a refined chamber-music approach, well-crafted counterpoint, and idiomatic writing for each instrument of the wind quintet.
In Botequim do Zeca, traditional choro meets chamber music within a festive and spontaneous soundscape, where compositional rigor coexists naturally with an imagined sense of improvisation. The melodies are lyrical and full of swing, the rhythms pulse with the essence of samba de raiz, and the dialogues between the winds recreate the animated conversations of a bustling bar immersed in music.
