Chicxulub is an electrifying and musically rich work for symphony chorus and chamber orchestra, vividly capturing the planet-altering event of the Chicxulub asteroid impact. The text, written by Dr. David Kring—a leading expert in impact cratering and the scientist who linked the Chicxulub crater to the K-T boundary mass extinction—grounds the work in scientific authenticity and drama. Composer Lee Johnson, celebrated for his Dead Symphony No. 6 and his orchestral, hybrid, choral, and crossover symphonies, brings his signature blend of innovation and emotional depth to the piece. Johnson, who directs the Composition and Technology (COMP|TECH) program at Auburn University, frequently composes and produces with the dynamic chamber orchestra standard affectionately known as the Johnsemble—a bold, boundary-pushing instrumentation that is inspiring a new generation of composers.

The Chicxulub impact event on the Yucatán Peninsula excavated the world’s largest surviving impact crater. The crater was filled by a sea of molten rock and crushed fragments of Earth’s crust. Additional melt was ejected into the atmosphere and fell like fiery rain across North and South America. Simultaneously, a vapor-rich cloud rose far into space, reaching half-way to the Moon, before reentering the Earth’s atmosphere and igniting wildfires. Dust and gas from the impact event choked the atmosphere, initially cooling the Earth by blocking sunlight and later heating the Earth by greenhouse warming. Most species of life were driven to extinction by the environmental calamity, including land-dwelling dinosaurs that had dominated Earth for over 100 million years.
