A Short Story in Blue opent met een lekkere 'medium swing' die wordt gevolgd door een melancholieke blues. Het laatste deel van het werk staat in een vrolijke 5/4 maat waarna een reprise van de inleiding de compositie besluit. Naast de reguliere bezetting zijn piano, basgitaar en drums toegevoegd. Verder zijn er zogenaamde 'Side Skills' opgenomen in de partituur en partijen; deze oefeningen kunnen als 'Warming Up' gebruikt worden voor het instuderen van de compositie.

A Short Story in Blue opens with an easy 'medium swing' which is followed by a more melancholy blues. The last part of the work is in a happy 5/4 beat and then closes with a reprise of the introduction. In addition to the regular orchestra, piano, bass and drums have been added.There are also so called 'Side Skills' included in the score and parts, which can be used as Warm Ups for learning the composition.

Le mouvement final de l’œuvre est écrit dans une mesure à 5/4 joyeuse, suivie d’une reprise de l’introduction. À côté de l’instrumentation régulière, piano, guitare basse et batterie ont été ajoutés. Ensuite il y a des soi-disant 'Side Skills’ dans la partition et dans les parts ; ces exercices peuvent être utilisés comme 'warming up’ pour étudier la composition.

A Short Story in Blue beginnt mit einem herrlichen 'Medium Swing', dieser wird mit einem melancholischen Blues fortgeführt. Der letzte Teil des Werkes ist in einem fröhlichen 3/4 Takt geschrieben, wonach eine Reprise von der Einleitung die Komposition abschließt. Neben der regulieren Besetzung sind Klavier, Basgitarre und Schlagzeug hinzugefügt. Weiterhin sind sogenannte 'Side Skills' in der Partitur und den Parteien aufgenommen; diese Übungen können als 'Warming-Up' für das Einstudieren der Komposition verwendet werden.
