not as expected
This collection wasn't very good in my opinion. Many pieces were quite simple unlike what I wanted. The recorded accompaniment isn't any good, really. I bought this, was dissapointed, and arranged my own instead.

One Fatal Flaw
Because no initial rhythm clue is given, and because there is no demo track, it is hard to know how to fit the solo to the accompaniment. Some of the songs have tricky rhythms and no clues are given as to how to play with it.

Show-stopping arrangements!
Love these interesting arrangements with orchestral accompaniment! I played them w/ the CD as background music at a noisy cocktail party, and I got applause! HOWEVER, improvements could be made to this edition to help the flutist stay synchronized with the CD accompaniment! Orchestral cues would be VERY helpful for the intros and tempo changes. At times, it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to tell where the orchestra is -- ie. I spent 1/2 hour trying to decipher the highly syncopated, off-beat intro to We 3 Kings. (Welcome back to Music dictation 101!) Plus, the orchestral attacks are so indistinct in some of the tempo changes, that it's difficult to tell where the beat is! In addition, the flute entrance in I Saw 3 ShIps is accompanied by random accents which, without an indication of the steady beat, are practically impossible to synchronize with. Despite this criticism, I think this book is FABULOUS! I wish the arranger would create a book of POPULAR Christmas/wintertime songs, too.

Definitely Advanced
These arrangements are awesome! They are very challenging for me and I hope I have them mastered by Christmas time! I have many play along flute books. This one I believe is in a league of its own. The CD only has accompaniment tracks which are beautiful but no track with someone playing the solo part. If you enjoy Christmas music and enjoy playing challenging parts, this book is for you. The background orchestra music is amazing. The only song I am not familiar with in this book is Patapan. The others are carols I've heard before. Gotta run! I have a deadline to get these mastered!!!...which is definitely challenging but fun.
