Winter Solstice Carol juxtaposes a contemplative poem about the darkness of winterand of our spiritswith the joyful exuberance of the angel's song at the incarnation. Giles Swayne's poem is sung by a larger choir (Choir 1), while the Latin text is sung by a smaller choir (Choir 2), ideally some distance away. This contemplative piece draws to a joyful close as the angel's song "Glory to God in the Highest" is sung, and handbells freely ring in a tower-like effect.
