This waltz uses chromaticism and the circle of 4ths to create a sound and mood that is both contemplative and dynamic. The chord progressions around the circle provide a solid harmonic grounding for the chromatic melody in the second part of the piece. The chords, which move chromatically is the first part, are overlain with a single-note melody that uses wider intervals and a turn motif, which "returns" at the end of the piece. The left-hand accompaniment patterns change with the amount of rhythmic activity in the melody. Three quarter-notes, two dotted quarters, or a syncopated figure are used throughout, as the tune requires. This shifting bass makes for not only an interesting waltz, but a chance to hear and see how an accompaniment might be improvised for such a tune in three-quarter time. Approx duration with repeat is 2 mins 10 secs. Pedal so as to make the second beat POP a bit, as marked with staccato dots.
