This is a new transcription for viola and piano by Annette Bartholdy of the Cello Sonata, Op. 40. It was recorded on the Naxos label by Bartholdy on viola and Julius Drake on piano. G. Schirmer has North American territorial rights to most of the works of Shostakovich, which allows Hal Leonard to sell this Boosey & Hawkes publication.

Shostakovich's 'other' Viola Sonata
This is a finely done transcription of the well known Op.40 Cello Sonata. It is not the first time it has appeared in print as such, but the first time it has been made freely available. To hear how effective it is, just listen to the transcriber Annette Bartholdy playing it on her Naxos recording. Beautifully printed and great fun to play, I consider this an essential piece to add to any viola player's library.
