These piano variations on "Guide My Feet" are suitable for church services, weddings, or any performance occasion.
This African American spiritual builds on a common theme in Christian hymnody: walking with and being guided by God. From the Welsh hymn "Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah" to the folk hymn "Just a Closer Walk with Thee," this theme undergirds Christian piety and spirituality.
The tune was collected by Spelman College folklorist Willis Laurence James on a trip to south Georgia in 1939. It has been included in 29 hymnals.
I have dedicated this set of variations for piano to my good friends Martin and Jerry Camper-Shearer, who had the assembled guests sing this song right after they jumped the broom at their wedding.
