Variations on a Theme of Nikita Koshkin was written in 1995 for the Zagreb Guitar Trio. Koshkin’s theme, dating from 1987, is a typical Siciliana in 6/8, with chromatic moves that provide a lyrical melody, deeply connected to a harmony expressing a beautiful sense of drama. The Variations present the lyrical theme in a different style which passes through several moods, from poetic to brilliant, each one with very interesting solutions that bring all the clusters of the theme into new kaleidoscopic combinations.
