Joseph Jean-Baptiste Laurent Arban (February 28, 1825 – April 8, 1889) was a cornetist, conductor, composer, pedagogue, and the first renowned virtuoso of the cornet à piston or valved cornet. He was influenced by Niccolò Paganini's virtuosic technique on the violin and demonstrated that the cornet could be a true solo instrument by developing virtuoso technique on the instrument.
He is best known for his instruction manual, Arban's Complete Conservatory Method for Cornet, originally published in 1864, which has been updated over the years and remains widely used.
Variations on a Song (Vois-tu la neige qui brille): The Beautiful Snow is one of the solos included in his Complete Conservatory Method for Cornet. This arrangement for concert band was made by Jari Villanueva for Dr. John Pursell, SMSgt (ret) of The USAF Band.
