Mustonen evokes its history in each of the works movements Die Kirchenbauer, Die Berührung des Heiligen, Dämonen, Der heilige Christophorus and Apotheosis. After the community of Petäjävesi in the heart of Finland had waited two years for permission to build the church, they began to build it themselves in 1763. The small wooden church in the style of a log cabin stands on a peninsula between two lakes and was listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1994.
Olli Mustonen ließ sich von der alten Holzkirche in Petäjävesi inspirieren. Das fünfsätzige Werk spiegelt ihre spirituelle Bedeutung wider: die Erbauer werden mit kraftvoller Musik portraitiert, die Heiligen durch geheimnisvolle Klänge repräsentiert. Die musikalischen Motive werden in einem abschließenden Finale zusammengeführt.
