Toccata on "Gabriel's Message" for solo organ Composed by Richard Dawson (b. 1991) Difficulty - c. Grade 8
Background Playing at Birmingham Town Hall for James Llewelyn Jones with the Midlands Hospitals’ Choir and the Phoenix Singers is always one of my favourite gigs of the year. It is always a special occasion for me, as James first invited me to play for one of these concerts when I was 18 or 19, and he has very kindly asked me back ever since. The first time I played for one of these concerts, James asked whether I would like to include an organ solo and suggested the "Toccata on 'Veni Emmanuel'" by Andrew Carter. A cracking piece. I have played it many times for these concerts since, as it is one of James’ favourites.
2025, however, was a break from tradition. I composed a piece by way of a “thank you” to James for such lovely concerts over the past fifteen years or so, which are always a Christmas highlight. Inspired by a variety of French composers, as well as the Carter Toccata (a short quotation of which appears right at the end), this performance marked the première of "Toccata on 'Gabriel’s Message'". It is also my first official organ solo composition since my own A Level composition As ever, it was a joy to be there, with both choirs on excellent form. Thank you, James.
