The title itself reveals a glimpse of its charming story: “Tico-Tico in the cornmeal.”
But what exactly is a “Tico-Tico”?
It’s a small, lively bird native to Brazil, notorious for sneaking into people’s homes and barns to peck at corn kernels and cornmeal stored in sacks. Zequinha de Abreu was amused by the sight of these mischievous little birds in his own countryside household. Inspired by their quick and restless movements, he transformed them into a musical piece full of life, where the melody flits and flutters like beating wings.
Originally, the piece was titled “Tico-Tico no Farelo” (“Tico-Tico in the bran”), but Abreu later changed it to “no Fubá” because it sounded more humorous and musical.
Since its premiere, “Tico-Tico” has captivated audiences worldwide, appearing in films, cartoons, and countless adaptations—from accordion and Hammond organ to full symphony orchestras. Today, we rediscover it in a fresh and spectacular arrangement for brass quintet, where each instrument in turn captures the frenzied energy of the little Tico-Tico.
