WHITE CLIFFS OF DOVER by Walter Kent for Brass Trio
There'll Be Bluebirds Over The White Cliffs of Dover was written in the last quarter of 1941, by American Composer Walter Kent and lyrics by Nat Burton, inspired by a 1940s poem by Alice Deur Miller titled "The White Cliffs".
The first recording took place in November of that year by the Glenn Miller Orchestra, featuring Ray Eberle as vocals. Although the United States had not entered the war, Americans were providing aid and support.
The song is closely tied with the events of World War 2, as on December 7, the attack on Pearl Harbour occurred - a devastating raid on the U.S. Naval Base.
Combined with current sentiments and the provision of aid, this event, in the eyes of the UK's Prime Minister Winston Churchill, hastened the entry of the United States into the Allied war efforts, which occurred on December 8, 1941, through President Theodore Roosevelt's "Day of Infamy" speech.
By Christmas, Miller's version reached 10th on the US Billboard Popularity Chart.
In early 1942, English singer, songwriter, and actress Dame Vera Lynn had her own version, which she sang at the home front and to the troops. She was a member of the Entertainments National Service Association Branch. It is undoubtedly one of her best-known songs, and it's her version we remember best.
It's an inspiration, providing hope and a new vision for better days ahead. It's also a lullaby to all with its soothing musical line. It can be programmed when honouring servicemen and women, in times of conflict or remembrance.
This setting is for a Brass Trio, consisting of Cornet, Tenor Horn, and Bb Euphonium. Alternates parts for French Horn and Bass Clef Euphonium/Trombone are also provided
