Wellerman” (Soon May the Wellerman Come) is a whaling song (sea shanty) originating in mid 19th Century in New Zealand. The English born Weller brothers moved to Sydney and went on to found a whaling station on a South Island of New Zealand. The ‘Wellerman’ tells of the whaling ship, the Billy of Tea, that puts to sea, encountering and harpooning a (w)right whale. Resisting capture, the whale takes charge and tows the ship across the high seas. The crew struggles on board with the whale for 40 days, while the ‘Wellerman’ visit occasionally bringing the crew wages of luxuries (not money mind you) to encourage them in the chase. The men on the ship are not paid proper wages thus the need when on shore to go “tounguin” (the cutting of strips of blubber ready for oil extraction). This tune sparked popularity as a result of pandemic isolation around 2020/21 and stimulated interest in sea shanties. This concert arrangement is for solo voice with piano accompaniment. Performance time: 3:30.
