As one of the most important American theater composers of the early 20th century, he wrote more than 700 songs to be used in over 100 stage works. These included such classics as Ol' Man River, Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man, A Fine Romance, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, All the Things You Are, Long Ago (and Far Away) and Who. In an interview regarding their collaboration on The Way You Look Tonight, Ms. Fields later remarked, "The first time Jerry played that melody for me I went out and started to cry.
