Valery Yur’yevich Kalistratov (7 June 1942 – 3 January 2020) was a Soviet and Russian choral conductor and composer. He studied choral conducting under Boris Tevlin at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, earning his diploma in 1970, and then continued at the same institution to complete a second degree in composition in 1974. Because his foundational training was in choral direction, Kalistratov naturally gravitated toward choral composition, and it became the cornerstone of his creative work.
He produced an extensive body of music that includes large-scale cantatas and oratorios, shorter works for mixed and children’s choirs, inventive arrangements of Russian folk songs, songs, and various orchestral and chamber pieces. His output also encompasses Orthodox chant settings and compositions that blend traditional folk elements with rich choral textures. Kalistratov served as artistic director of ensembles such as the academic choir of the Central House of Art Workers and the esteemed Pyatnitsky Russian Folk Choir, and later conducted the Moscow Male-Voice Chamber Choir. Over the course of his career he gained recognition both as a performer and a composer, frequently attending performances of his works both in Russia and abroad. In 2007 he was honored as a People’s Artist of the Russian Federation and held a professorship in choral conducting at the Moscow Conservatory.
