Like the first Augener printing, this Revised Augener is intended as a performer's edition. The fine nineteenth-century engraving is retained, but Ernest Pauer's original markings have been replaced with pedalling, phrasing and fingering that correspond to the composer's original intentions. The textural issues remain complex. Pianists wishing to investigate the provenance of specific details are referred to the Henle Edition or Wiener Urtext, where a complete list of alternatives may be found. Following the example of these editions however, this Revised Augener presents the most probable and accurate reading for each of the studies. Thus an invaluable working edition is provided for this corpus of work, offering, as it does, amongst the most profound and disciplined challenges the performing musician is likely to encounter.
