Great to have nearby
This is a wonderful book to add some easier variety to the service music. Many pieces are good take off spots for your own improvisation. If you're building that skill set you'll find many useful pieces in both volumes.

Must have book
I first bought book one. I use these for offertories and communion and can almost always find a tune based upon one of the Sunday hymns. They can be repeated with different registrations to make them longer. Some can be used for short preludes. Very easy for a trained organist. Many are manuals only for the beginner.

Very useful.
I use this (and vol. 1) every week for music during the administration of communion in an Episcopalian Church. A few of the arrangements are pedestrian. Many are inventive and attractive, with opportunities to show off a variety of registrations. Can be sight read by a fluent organist, settings can cut to fit or embellished to extend as needed.

Wonderful collection
If you have both volumes I and II of The Art of Hymn Playing, you will never run out of musical ideas. Charles Callahan's music is always accessible to both the performer and the congregation.
