This book is an important follow-up to the technical studies in the first book. There are just three sections: interval studies, chordal studies, and scales. Etudes test the preceding material at regular points throughout. The chordal studies emphasize the major, minor, augmented, and diminished triads along with the common 7th chords. The scale exercises will get a player accustomed to playing in all 12 major and minor scales. In addition to the major and all three types of minor scales, groups of exercises focus on chromatic, whole tone, and diminished scales. This book exceeds the treatment of intervals, arpeggios, and scales given in the scales and more advanced studies of Arban's Complete Method. The richer assortment of chords and scales explored prepares a player for jazz (Dorian mode is neglected, though) and other more contemporary music styles. The scale etudes especially build on previous technical studies with a modern tonality.
