Summer is the second in a series of symphonic poems, inspired by the seasons and the folk music of Scandinavia. In Spring, the composer made use of two Swedish folk tunes, whereas Summer incorporates Finnish folk music, his ownmusical impressions of the landscape and a quote from Jean Sibelius Symphony No. 1, resulting in a sonorous and inspiring tone poem.
Na Spring is Summer het tweede symfonische gedicht dat Johan de Meij heeft gebaseerd op de jaargetijden en volksmuziek van Scandinavie. Spring bevatte Zweedse volksmelodieen, terwijl Summer op Finland gericht is: hiervoorverweefde de componist Finse volksmuziek met eigen muzikale impressies van landschappen plus een citaat uit de Eerste symfonie van Jean Sibelius tot een klankrijk, inspirerend geheel.
