Develops Core Skills for Ensemble Playing
Although primarily solo studies for euphonium/baritone, these pieces by Steven Mead are excellent for developing musicality crucial for collaborative playing. The '20th Century' etudes encourage a strong sense of line and precise articulation, vital for blending in an ensemble. While not featuring a piano accompaniment, they build the foundational skills an instrumentalist needs to be a truly responsive and prepared partner.

Solid Technique Builder for Euphonium
While these 'Concert Studies' aren't designed for direct gig use, they're an excellent tool for honing technique and musicality for performance. The 13 original pieces by contemporary composers offer fresh challenges for euphonium and baritone players. Good for maintaining chops and expanding your expressive range, which is always useful for any professional setting. The provided demo CD is a nice bonus.

Excellent Studies for Intermediate Euphonium Students
Steven Mead's New Concert Studies are a fantastic resource for intermediate euphonium or baritone students. The 'intermediate' level is accurately gauged, offering engaging technical challenges and musicality. The clear layout makes them easy to read, and the accompanying demo CD is invaluable for demonstrating rhythm and phrasing. A solid addition to any teacher's library for developing well-rounded instrumentalists.

Elevator Music
Melodically boring, entirely predictable. OK for practice, I guess--if you can keep your eyes open . . .
