The "Venetian Gondola Song"
The piece we are about to hear is the sixth of the Second Book, and it is famously known as the "Venetian Gondola Song" (Venezianisches Gondellied).
Imagine for a moment the atmosphere of 19th-century Venice:
The rhythmic, swaying motion of the water.
The dark, mysterious canals at night.
The melancholy, yet beautiful chant of a gondolier.
The music starts with a gentle, undulating accompaniment in 6/8 time, mimicking the rocking of a boat. Then, a hauntingly beautiful melody enters—it feels intimate, slightly nostalgic, and deeply poetic.
The Organ Transcription by Sandro Carnelos
While this was originally written for the piano, tonight we will experience it through a different lens. We are listening to the transcription for organ by the Italian organist and composer Sandro Carnelos.
Transcribing Mendelssohn for the organ is a delicate task. Carnelos has done an extraordinary job of:
Preserving the Intimacy: He ensures the organ doesn't lose that "vocal" quality Mendelssohn intended.
Using Colors: Through the use of specific stops (the registrazione), the organ can actually enhance the atmosphere, perhaps using a flute or a soft reed to give the melody a more ethereal, distant feel.
The Pedalboard: The rhythmic "rocking" of the waves is often entrusted to the pedals, providing a steady, grounding pulse that allows the hands to focus on the expressive dialogue of the melodies.
