Written in viola register, not for cello
It may be news to the transcriber, but the cello is an octave lower than the viola. This transcription is simply the viola score re-typeset in treble and bass clefs (mostly the former). There are about 10 bars in the whole score that are dropped by an octave into cello register, making for some weird transitions, although the effect is kind of cool.Of course, dropping the string part by an octave would lead to some other tough choices about whether/where to shift the piano part, but really: a cello transcription should be in cello register so the player can take advantages of the differences in sonority between the instruments, rather than just a cello pretending to be a (bad) viola.Incidentally, writing it in cello register would also make it far far easier to play.
