Het oorspronkelijke, 16e eeuwse Ricercare, was eigenlijk een vocale vorm zonder woorden. De instrumentale muziek zoekt daarin naar zelfstandigheid: de inhoud was dus een muzikale invocatie. Ook het hierna in te leiden Ricercare is een oproep van verschillende thema's, die 'ogenschijnlijk' onderling tegenstrijdig zijn, maar die juist door hun contrast en door contrapunctische samenspraak een symfonisch geheel vormen.Eén dezer thema's wordt gevormd door de tonen b, a, c, h.Met het oude motetkarakter heeft dit Ricercare overigens geen overeenkomst.

The original 16th century Ricercare was actually a vocal work without words.Instrumental music is in search of its independence: the content was so to say a musical invocation.The Ricercare in this case is an invocation of the various themes - seemingly contradictory - yet forming a symphonic unity, which is attained by their contrast and their dialogue in counterpoint.One of these themes is formed by the tones B - A - C - H (B = German for B-flat; H = German for B-natural).This Ricercare has nothing to do with the old Motet character.

Le Ricercare était à l'origine, au 16e siècle, un genre vocal, sans paroles. La musique cherche là son autonomie: le contenu était donc une invocation musicale.Ce présent Ricercare se compose d'un groupe de thèmes différents, qui semblent 'apparemment' contradictoires, mais qui forment justement par leur contraste par leur dialogue contrapuntique un tout symphonique.Un de ces thèmes est formé par les tons 'b, a, c, h' (notation allemande pour: Si b, la, do, si).Ce Ricercare n'a par ailleurs aucune ressemblance avec l'ancien caractère de motet.

Das aus dem 16.Jahrhunder stammende ursprüngliche Ricercare war eigentlich eine vokale Form ohne Worte. Die instrumentale Musik suchte darin nach Selbständigkeit; der Inhalt war daher eine musikalische Anrufung. Auch das hiernach einzuleitende Ricercare ist eine Anrufung verschiedener Themen, die offenbar im Gegensatz zueinander stehen, doch die gerade durch ihren Kontrast und ihren kontrapunktischen Zusammenklang eine symphonische Ganzheit bilden. Eines dieser Themen entsteht durch die Töne b, a, c, h. Mit dem alten Motettencharakter hat dieses Ricercare übrigens nichts gemein.
