This piece was loosely inspired by the pieces in the "French Book." The contemplative and serene slow movement is paired with a whimsical and rhythmic fast movement. The slow and fast sections are meant to be played together, but a student may break them apart if desired.
The story behind the piece:
A hiker follows a rocky river up through a tree-lined gorge. He comes across an abandoned watermill, its enormous wheel broken and roof collapsing. The hiker sits on a moss-covered boulder and appreciates the beauty of the industrial building, now consumed by the surrounding nature. The simplicity of the scene is filled with the sounds of the shallow, bubbling river and local wildlife. As the hiker explores the mill, a signpost illuminates the vibrant and industrious past of the now-decaying building. He begins to see the mill in a new light, imagining the vibrant community that used to keep the wheel turning and business thriving. As the hiker's reflections take a step into the past, the mill comes to life. The incessant roar of the gears and sloshing of the water form a unique rhythm that is the life of the mill's workforce. The tide of the river, now high and fierce, pushes the wheel again and again. The workers shout to one another, their voices muffled by the constant noise. The hiker feels the stifling heat from inside the mill and backs away in a sudden discontentment.
