The title of this prelude may seem redundant, but while both words are similar in meaning there is a greater sense of finality to “farewell.” It is the difference between “see you later” and “we may never see each other again.” They had known each other for years…a lifetime. As children, their parents lived on the same street in your average small town which had two grocery stores, a bank, a drug store, a Ben Franklin, a couple gas stations and a laundromat. By the time they were in high school, they were fast friends. They shared meals at each other’s homes, went out for pizza a few times each month and would even occasionally be invited to go with on family vacations. After high school, they attended the same university and even roomed together. Their common interests in music, movies, television and a similar sense of humor bound them even closer as the years rolled steadily onward. As so often happens, there were periods of separation when life took them in different directions, yet the twists and turns of fate and time brought about the inevitable crossing of paths and they never lost touch with each other. How many “goodbyes” were spoken is incalculable, but each one was followed soon after by a “hello.” There will come a time when “farewell” is at last spoken, but even that is not the end of the story.
