This is number fourteen in the series of intermediate preludes.
Right from the opening measure there is a feeling of unsettledness to the music. With the exception of the downbeat of each measure, the two hands almost never play together and are always off by a sixteenth beat. This also propels the music forward and gives it a sense of perpetual motion...just like the sea. The key of C minor also provides a further air of disquiet, and even when it shifts briefly to C major, the light is short-lived and seems more to be a remembrance of times past than a hopeful look to the future.
