Hvalite imia Ghospodne No. 2. Composed by Aleksandr Arkhangelsky. Choral octavo. With Language: Church Slavonic. Musica Russica #AR 136. Published by Musica Russica (M6.AR-136).
Alexander Arkhangelsky (18461924) was an avid student of Western European choral polyphony as it was being rediscovered in the course of the 19th century. He is best known for his sacred choral concertos, mostly on psalm texts, that tend to be dramatic or sentimental (or both), but which are, nevertheless, great favorites with Russian churchgoers to this day. His Praise the Name of the Lord No. 2 is in a totally different style, drawing upon the Russian Orthodox technique of canonarching, similar to liningout or call and response. The choral writing is clear and transparent, with results that can best be described as luminous.
