Very good
A high school student told me he wanted to learn music theory and improvisation. I gave him this book for the theory. It's very thorough - covering basic music reading and progressing to writing chords, etc. - and the best part is that the student can do it on his own. I'd especially recommend this book for adults who are interested in the how of music.

Practical Theory-Complete
A very basic theory book that can be used for voice or any instrument. It is simple yet has explanations and diagrams that help explain it clearly. This book can be used for students to take home and work or work on in class. It covers most everything the average student would need to know. It is easy enough for beginners to understand but also teaches to a more difficult level
