Together with the six organ symphonies, the 24 Pièces de fantaisie are Louis Vierne’s most important contribution to the French Romantic organ repertoire. This collection shows Vierne at the height of his compositional powers. Op. 54 with the Carillon de Westminster is by far the most well-known piece in this collection and, along with the Final of the 1ère Symphonie, the most famous of all Vierne’s compositions. He himself played it on innumerable occasions, such as at the re-inauguration of the Notre Dame organ in 1932. While visiting London in 1924, Vierne had heard the Westminster chimes sounding from Big Ben, the clock-tower of the Houses of Parliament.
