With his six symphonies for organ, written between 1895 and 1930, Louis Vierne carried on the splendid tradition of this genre and brought it to its peak. Vierne dedicated his Symphony, opus 14, to his friend and mentor Alexandre Guilmant. Guilmant played the 1ère Symphonie to a small gathering on the organ of the Paris Palais du Trocadéro. With its six-movement structure the Symphony is more in the nature of a suite. A possible model for this was Charles-Marie Widor’s Second Symphony which also has six movements.
