Roman Polanski's successful film The Pianist has focused attention on the Nocturne in c sharp minor by Chopin. Our edition presents the work in two versions. One derives from the handwritten copy which was owned by Chopin's sister Ludwika. The other is a noticeably different original version found in Chopin's original draft, now preserved in the Chopin Museum in Valldemosa (Mallorca). It is your turn to play the music from The Pianist. This reasonably priced edition is extracted from the volume of complete Chopin Nocturnes (HN 185).

Amazingly revealing!
If you're reading this, it's probably because you're scratching your head wondering WHICH of the umpteenth versions of this masterpiece to play. The good news: these two early versions are fascinating and provide clues for performance; e.g. the transition timing from 4/4 to 3/4, and the necessary trill in measure 27; the bad: you'll still be scratching your head. The two differ in so many ways, and also differ from all published versions. Before you play this nocturne, studying this marvelous and very inexpensive dual edition is a MUST!

Chopin Nocturne c-sharp minor, op. posth
I am an adult piano student at the early advanced level and am just beginning to master some of the more complicated advanced level pieces. I love Chopin's music, both listening to and playing it, and am trying to learn as much Chopin as I can. I like the Henle Urtext edition because of the easy to read layout of the music and the good introductory reading material. This particular edition of the Nocturne in c sharp minor has two versions of the piece. This is good for students of music history who want to study differences in the scores. My only suggestion is that the fingering markings be a little larger and easier to read. Other than that, it is a great edition to use. You might also want to try the other Henle Chopin editions, too.
