    Outstanding

I have 5 different editions of the Beethoven Sonatas -- several bought recently -- and this is by far the best one. It is excellent. The scholarship is trustworthy. The pages are well laid out and easy to read. The binding is good; it opens flat and it stays open. Also some interesting and often very useful fingering. I'm glad I bought this edition.

Best of the three editions I have....

I wanted to play Sonata #14 (Moonlight) and got the edition by Arthur Schnabel that turned out to be surprisingly awful. Fingering was silly, excess other markings, inconvenient page breaks. My piano teacher got me an edition by Alexander Goldenweiser (printed in Russia) that was better, but printed too small and sloppy. I decided to get this Urtext edition and it turned out to be extremely good. I am a beginning student (at it 3 years or so) so it is a difficult piece for me, but at least I can read the music for a change.

    Can't go wrong...

...with the Henle Vertag books! It amazes me how these scores compare to others I've seen/played that were printed by Schirmers. Schirmer has a lot more dynamic markings and even extra notes that don't appear in the Henle editions. As my coach pointed out, many of those notations are suggestions for improved understanding or possible ways of interpretation. I don't know; If the composer didn't include it in the score, I believe it should be left out, as Henle does. Nice big, black notes, easy to read.

    By Far The Best Edition

If you have yet to use a Henle Urtext edition for Bach or Beethoven in particular, you do not know what you are missing. This is one of the most, if not the most, reliable, scholarly, and well laid out editions you can buy. Very much a worthwhile investment.
