Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) originally wrote Ma mère l'Oye (Mother Goose) in 1910 as a piano duet for the Godebski children, Mimi (6) and Jean (7). In 1911, Ravel orchestrated the work into a five-piece suite, which is how the work is most commonly heard today. But later in that same year, he also expanded the work into a ballet adding interludes between each tableau and two more movements to the start. The ballet premieres on January 29th, 1912, at the Théâtre des Arts in Paris. Instrumentation: 2(2dPicc).2(2dEH).2.2(2dCBsn: 2.0.0.0: Timp.Perc(5-6): Hp.Clst: Str (4-4-3-3-3).
