Pavane pour une infante défunte Piano Solo by Maurice Ravel Piano Solo - Sheet Music

By Maurice Ravel

According to Ravel himself, the strange title of the little piano piece composed in 1899, “Pavane for a dead princess,” should not be ascribed too much importance. He chose it mainly because he liked the alliteration it contained. At the same time he did, however, agree that the music evokes “a pavane that a little princess once might have danced at the Spanish court.” Following its premiere in 1902 the simple but effective piece gained unparalleled popularity, not least reflected in the numerous arrangements made of it, one of which, for small orchestra, was by Ravel himself. Henle publishes the work in its original version.

A good sight-read

If one wants to play a piece by Ravel that isnt as challenging as Le Tombeau de Couperin this is the one. Henle does a nice job of printing the notes that arent too small and is easy to sight-read. Compositionally this piece has a lot in common with much of Debussys output. I definitely recommend this for anyone willing to try modern piano music.

Pavane pour une infante dfunte

The product is almost as perfect as it could get. I love Henle editions which is why I own dozens of them and Henle is usually my first choice for a clear, readable, reliable edition. I have one point of confusion with this one, however. At measure 1 there is a c in the bass instead of an e. Henle is the ONLY edition I've seen that specifies that. I have been looking for the first page of the original Demets edition, but all I can find is the cover page. Everyone plays it wit an e. I would love to know the source of that specific deviation. Although, I'm kind of getting used to the sound of the c, despite the dissonance, which seems premature with the harmonic rhythm. I would love an explanation. Thank you
